Attack on Iraqi pilgrims kills 50, scores hurt (Reuters)

BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) ? A suicide bomber disguised as a policeman killed at least 53 people and wounded scores in an attack on Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims at a checkpoint on Saturday.

The bombing at the end of Arbain, one of the main religious observances in the Shi'ite calendar, was the worst such incident this year, amid a political crisis and renewed fears of a resurgence of sectarian violence.

"A terrorist wearing a police uniform and carrying fake police I.D. managed to reach a police checkpoint and blew himself up among police and pilgrims," said a police official at the scene of the bombing.

The pilgrims had been on their way to a major Shi'ite mosque to the west of Basra, police said.

Security forces sealed off the main hospital in Basra, fearing further attacks as soldiers, police and civilians rushed blood-covered victims to the hospital. Some of the wounded were stuffed into car trunks.

Hundreds of wailing relatives packed into the city morgue searching for casualties. One woman lay on the floor screaming for her dead son and covering her head with dust from the ground in a traditional expression of grief.

Riyadh Abdul-Ameer, director of the Basra health office, told Reuters the blast killed 53 people, with another 130 wounded. Other officials had earlier put the toll at 32 to 35 dead with 90 to more than 100 wounded.

POLITICAL CRISIS

Tensions in Iraq have wider implications in the region. Neighboring Syria is in turmoil, and Shi'ite Iran and Sunni Arab Gulf nations and Turkey are positioning themselves for more influence.

Arbain marks the end of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was killed in a 7th century battle in the Iraqi holy city of Kerbala. It has been a repeated target of militants since the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein.

Some Sunni Islamist groups such as al Qaeda view Shi'ites as heretics. Saddam banned such Shi'ite religious commemorations.

Hundreds of thousands of Shi'ites have flocked to Kerbala from across Iraq, as well as Iran and other countries in recent days. The observance reached its peak on Saturday.

Scores of people have been killed in attacks on pilgrims in the last few weeks, including a suicide bombing which killed at least 44 people.

Many of the incidents involved methods such as suicide bombings, the signature of Iraq's al Qaeda affiliate.

Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government has issued an arrest warrant for a Sunni vice president, triggering a political crisis that risks scuttling a power-sharing agreement among Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurdish blocs.

Violence had declined since the height of sectarian slaughter in 2006-2007, when thousands were killed in intercommunal strife. But the withdrawal of the last American troops in December has stirred worries of a resurgence.

2. Raise taxes. Sure, it?s painful and unpopular, but that?s the nature of this business. Those Bush tax cuts were a nice perk in times of plenty, but the United States is leaving too much money on the table. Paul Ryan says it?s ?class warfare? to raise taxes on the rich, and he?s right?that?s why we should go beyond Obama?s proposal and repeal the middle-class portion of the cuts, too. While we?re at it, the charitable deduction for income taxes is good politics but terrible management. And why don?t churches pay property tax? Time for the IRS to pass the collection plate.

Obama aims to reward businesses that invest in US (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he wants to reward companies that invest in America and eliminate tax breaks for companies that don't, and he's planning new tax proposals to do it.

A day after his Republican foes competed in the New Hampshire primary, Obama sought to grab back the spotlight and underscore his focus on the economy by convening a White House forum on how to increase employment and bring back jobs that have fled overseas.

Speaking alongside a group of business executives in the East Room, Obama said that rising American productivity and increasingly competitive costs add up to "a unique moment, an inflection point" for businesses to invest in the U.S. and bring jobs back home. And he argued there's a moral case for it, too, and that business leaders have a responsibility to their country.

"So my message to business leaders today is simple: ask yourselves what you can do to bring jobs back to the country that made our success possible ? and I'm going to do everything in my power to help you do it. We're going to have to seize this moment," Obama said.

"This moment is perfectly suited for our advantages, it's perfectly suited for who we are," he said. "The global marketplace is becoming more innovative, more creative, more transparent, faster, more adaptable ? that's who we are, that's our strength. We've got to take advantage of it."

The White House gave the session a high profile in the wake of Mitt Romney's victory in New Hampshire, which solidified his lead over the GOP presidential field. Romney has targeted Obama as a foe of free enterprise. Obama's forum aimed in part to counter that message.

Obama highlighted big and small firms ranging from Ford to a North Carolina specialty furniture company as examples of enterprises that have invested in the U.S. rather than abroad. He called on other companies to do the same with the help of government incentives.

The White House says the president will propose $12 million in his 2013 budget to promote business investment from overseas in the United States. Obama said he'd propose tax changes in the next few weeks but he didn't provide details.

Ceton previews multi-room DVR and Echo extender (hands-on)

The company that has single handedly spurred the golden age of CableCARD has found a new way to deliver its technology to consumers with a 6 tuner multi-room DVR with a 2TB hard drive, codenamed Q, and its companion extender, codenamed Echo. No word on the price of either but both are expected to ship in 2012.

While the Q and Echo might look like Microsoft Media Center, they aren't. Based on the Windows 7 Embedded platform, the Q picks up where Microsoft left off but still leverages the great DVR functionality and free guide data. In addition to being used as an extender for the Q, the Echo is also a fully compliant Extender for Windows Media Center. The Echo will support both ethernet and MoCA for communication to the source and has HDMI-CEC for control as well as an included remote. When used with the Q, it will extend the entire Q experience, including streaming sources and enhanced search that facilitates content discovery. Speaking of the Q, that slot up front is a Blu-ray drive and in addition to being able to play Blu-ray Discs, the plan is to integrate as many streaming sources as possible (no partners to announce yet, though). The Q will also work with other Extenders for Windows Media Center, like the Xbox 360, but while the custom themes are there, the other streaming options aren't. Ceton has even developed a Windows 8 Metro and Windows Phone 7 app to extend the Q experience to the handhelds -- iOS apps are on the road map. These apps are primarily designed to be companions to the Q's search and discovery features, but will provide access to content via WiFi.

Competition 'hard' this season, 'Idol' judges say

Randy Jackson may have been around since the birth of "American Idol," but this season only marks the second time Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will be behind the judges table covered with Coke cups.

When we chatted with them at Sunday's Fox winter press tour, the judges were in very high spirits, despite just leaving a panel where they ripped "The Voice" and "X Factor" apart. There wasn't any more talk about other singing competitions on TV, but they did reveal some secrets about season 11. Plus, Jennifer and Randy have some well wishes for new mom Beyonce ...

Being a new judge on the No. 1 show on television isn't an easy task, but Lopez and Tyler insist that they've learned some lessons from having one season under their belt.

"We cut more to the chase [this season]," Lopez told E! "We were finding our way last year. But now that we know the process, we know what we're doing."

And what they're doing is being overwhelmed with talent in the upcoming season. When we asked how many contestants they thought at this point could go all the way, the number was impressive.

"Last year there was two. This year there are 10," Tyler revealed.

Lopez added: "It's harder this year. We're having a hard time cutting people."

While developing this large group of talent, the Aerosmith rocker will find time plan his wedding. Will he have to find time during the season to talk centerpieces and napkin rings? "Probably. It's going to come down to that."

'Idol' shouldn't let Seacrest get away

Finally, we had to ask Lopez if she had any advice for new mom Beyonce, since she's a working mom herself. "We're just so happy for her. I know this will be the most beautiful time of her life and I just wish her the best," she tells us.

As for the baby's much-talked-about name, Blue Ivy, Randy quipped: "That's a dope name."

Joran van der Sloot may be ready to confess to Peruvian murder ( video)

Joran van der Sloot said he wanted to confess to the murder of?Stephany Flores in Peru in 2010. ?Van der Sloot is still a suspect?in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005. ? ?

Joran?van?der?Sloot?appears ready to accept responsibility for the killing of a Peruvian woman five years to the day after the disappearance in Aruba of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, for which he remains the prime suspect.

The Dutch citizen sought and received more time to decide how to plead as his trial opened Friday in the May 30, 2010, murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, whom he met at a Lima casino.

He said he was inclined to confess but doesn't accept the aggravated murder charges the prosecution seeks.

The presiding magistrate of the three-judge panel, Victoria Montoya, said the trial would resume Jan. 11.

When asked moments earlier by Montoya to enter a plea,?Van?der?Sloot?answered in Spanish:

"I want to give a sincere confession but I don't agree with all the aggravating factors the prosecutor is putting on me. Can I have more time to think about this?"

The 24-year-old Dutch citizen had repeatedly shaken his head as the prosecutor described for the judges howVan?der?Sloot?allegedly "brutally" beat and strangled the victim in his Lima hotel room, intending to rob her.

Van?der?Sloot?long ago admitted to police that he killed Flores, a business administration student.

But he claimed in that confession that it was in a fit of rage after she discovered on his laptop?Van?der?Sloot's connection to Holloway's disappearance on Aruba, the Caribbean island where he was raised. Police forensic experts have disputed that version of events.

Defense attorney Jose Luis Jimenez told The Associated Press before the hearing that there was a 70 percent chance?Van?der?Sloot?would plead guilty, which could help him get a reduced sentence.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence on murder and theft charges, arguing the killing was premeditated and that?Van?der?Sloot?attempted to cover it up, fleeing to Chile, where he was captured days later.

Jimenez contends his client was in a state of emotional distress when he killed Flores and would "seek to reduce the charge from first-degree murder to manslaughter," which carries a prison sentence of from eight to 20 years.

"He has accepted the murder," Jimenez said after the hearing, but not with the "aggravating factors of cruelty and ferocity."

If he pleads guilty at next Wednesday's hearing, the three judges will have 48 hours to sentence him, court officials say.

Van?der?Sloot?entered the courtroom in Lurigancho prison in Lima on Friday morning in a blue blazer and faded blue jeans with a bulletproof vest beneath the jacket. He sported a crew cut and wore an untucked long-sleeved button-down gray shirt.

He took off the vest in the courtroom, which lacked air conditioning, and fidgeted, yawning several times and slouching in his chair while attorneys for both sides discussed new evidence and witnesses they were entering in the record.
