Forest City To Divest its Land Business, Some Retail

The Great Recession Ends 60-Year Involvement in Land Development

CoStar Group
by Mark Heschmeyer

After starting out in the land development business 60 years ago, Forest City Enterprises Inc. will reposition or divest its land holdings and is actively reviewing alternatives to do so.

Instead, Forest City is launching a new, four-year strategic plan that will focus its business on its core rental products - apartments, office and retail - in its core markets of New York, Washington DC, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver. Not included in that list of core markets is Forest City's home base, Cleveland, OH.

The land business buys and sells raw land, develops subdivisions and sells lots to homebuilders. Forest City's land portfolio consists of approximately 35 active projects primarily located in the Southwestern U.S., Texas, the Carolinas and Ohio. As of the end of the third quarter, Forest City listed its value at around $340 million.

(AP) ? Dutch troops are joining a race against time to prepare ice for a legendary 125-mile (200 kilometer) race across frozen waterways in the northern Netherlands that could be staged for the first time in 15 years.

Defense Ministry spokesman Peter Grotens says a group of 50 soldiers is shoveling snow along a possible alternative route in case ice on part of the traditional track of the Elfstedentocht, or 11 Cities Tour, is too weak to support the 16,000 skaters who would take part if organizers stage the race.

Grotens said Wednesday the troops are stationed nearby and volunteered to help.

The Frisian Eleven Cities Association that organizes the event is meeting Wednesday night to discuss whether the ice is strong enough for the race.

Antidepressants May Not Raise Suicide Risk in Youth: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Feb. 6 (HealthDay News) -- Antidepressant drugs such as Prozac do not raise suicide risk in young people, a new study says.

The finding should help reassure doctors about prescribing antidepressants to youngsters, said first author Robert Gibbons, a professor of medicine, health studies and psychiatry at the University of Chicago.

In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered a "black box warning" for Prozac (generic name fluoxetine) after data from 25 clinical trials suggested the medications increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and young adults up to age 25.

But this analysis of data from 41 clinical trials involving a total of more than 9,000 patients identified no such link in either adults or children.

"I hope that the [black box] warnings will not prevent depressed children and adults from getting treatment for depression," Gibbons said in a university news release.

One expert agreed. Dr. Mark Russ, director of psychiatric services at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, N.Y., said the study "argues that treatment with the antidepressant medications examined ... is not associated with a higher risk of suicidal ideation and behavior, and should not be withheld for this reason."

The study also found that Prozac and another antidepressant called Effexor (venlafaxine) reduced suicidal behavior and depression in adults and seniors.

For their study, Gibbons and colleagues used clinical trial data -- some of it unpublished -- from drug makers and a large U.S. National Institute of Mental Health collaborative study of Prozac and Effexor. The study -- funded by the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health and the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality -- appears online Feb. 6 in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

To assess the effects of antidepressants in children, the researchers examined four trials of Prozac. Until recently, it was the only antidepressant approved for use in children, according to a University of Chicago Medical Center news release.

The studies showed that the drug reduced depression symptoms in children and did not have any effect on their suicide risk.

The results from the trials of Prozac and Effexor in adults and seniors found that the drugs reduced both depression symptoms and suicide risk. This suggests that antidepressants cut the suicide risk in adults and seniors by easing patients' depression, the news release said.

"I think that this paper supports the general idea that the effects of antidepressants in kids and adults are not really the same, since we don't see anything but beneficial effects of antidepressants in adults and geriatrics," Gibbons said in the release. "In kids, we don't see a harmful effect, but we do see a disassociation between the beneficial effects on depression and the potential beneficial effect on suicide."

He added: "This raises continued questions about what's going on in children. Maybe children think about suicide in part because of depression, but also maybe due to other reasons not related to depression that are not affected by antidepressants."

One expert welcomed the study findings.

"This very important study goes a long way to undoing what I consider an ill-conceived FDA issued black box warning for antidepressants and risk of suicide in children and adolescents," said Dr. Norman Sussman, a psychiatrist at NYU Medical Center in New York City. "It was a finding of an increased rate of ideation [suicidal thoughts] and attempts during some clinical trials that formed the entire basis for the FDA black box warning. Yet, as the authors of the current paper point out, no actual suicides occurred in these [trials]."

According to Sussman, who is also professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, the warning led to a drop in antidepressant prescriptions for depressed children. "In what I hope will lead to a corrective series advisories that encourage antidepressant use, the results of this study confirm what clinicians have observed all along, namely, treatment with antidepressants decreases suicide risk," he said.

Gibbons agreed. "The greatest cause of suicide is untreated or undiagnosed depression," he said. "It's very important that this condition be recognized and appropriately treated and not discarded because doctors are afraid to be sued."

Palestinians: Home sprayed with 'Death to Arabs' (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Palestinians say extremist Jews have scrawled their home in a West Bank village with offensive graffiti in retaliation for an upcoming demolition of a wildcat Jewish outpost.

Resident Ayid Mazloum, 47, says the men sprayed his home with "Death to the Arabs" before being chased from the village of El-Jinya.

Other graffiti refers to an unauthorized settlement outpost that Israeli forces demolished in January, and to another outpost slated for demolition in March.

Mazloum says the vandals were discovered early Sunday morning and fled to the nearby Israeli settlement of Talmon.

Some extremist Jews have damaged Palestinian property in retaliation for Israeli government action against settlers.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the army was investigating.

Film and Video Face Off for Cinema Supremacy [Video]

The conquering of traditional film by video technology is a story whose outcome was perhaps decided years ago. (AP) ? Jason Terry was more than willing to take the big shots, with Dirk Nowitzki just getting back into the Dallas Mavericks' lineup. Terry made them when they mattered, too.

Terry scored the last four points in overtime, after hitting a tying 15-footer with a half-second remaining in regulation, and the Mavericks came back after blowing a big lead against San Antonio's reserves to beat the Spurs 101-100 Sunday night.

"He put us on his shoulders there," said Nowitzki, who played for the first time after a four-game hiatus to strengthen his sore right knee and do some conditioning work. "He made some great pull-ups. He got to his sweet spot to send it to OT."

Terry put Dallas ahead to stay when he took a pass from Nowitzki and made a 12-foot baseline jumper with 42 seconds left to make it 99-98. After Shawn Marion stole the ball from Gary Neal, Terry got fouled and made both free throws with 17 seconds left.

"It's just the will to win when the game is on the line," Terry said. "I like to take the shot when the game is on the line. ... When my team needs me the most, I'm going to come through regardless of what's going on the entire night. Fourth quarter is winning time."

Terry scored 26 of his season-high 34 points after halftime, though the Spurs still had a chance after his last two free throws.

Neal, who finished with 19 points, drove for a layup and was fouled by Marion with 12 seconds left. But Neal missed a potential tying free throw that was rebounded by Ian Mahinmi, who was fouled and missed two free throw attempts.

After Neal got that rebound and the Spurs called timeout, Vince Carter knocked the ball loose. Danny Green grabbed it and threw up a 3-pointer that ricocheted off the front of the rim as the game ended.

Green and the Spurs thought he had a game-winner at the end of regulation, but his 14-footer was disallowed when replay clearly showed that shot didn't get out of his hands before the buzzer sounded.

"I thought it was good, but I guess it was too good to be true," Green said.

Dallas led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter before San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich decided to go with his reserves. The Spurs' last 51 points after that came from bench players, and they went ahead by as many as nine in the fourth quarter with the help of a flurry of 3-pointers.

"We were just on fire shooting 3s and it got us back in the game. It's as simple as that. I thought the energy defensively was great; we double-teamed everywhere," Popovich said. "They were playing great. There's no sense in taking them off the court."

The last Spurs starter to score was Richard Jefferson on a 3-pointer with 4:28 left in the third quarter. When Jefferson came out less than 2 minutes later, the only starter to re-enter the game was Kawhi Leonard for 1.1 seconds in overtime.

Terry's tying shot at the end of regulation was set up after Rodrigue Beaubois, starting for injured Jason Kidd, drove for a layup with 30 seconds left and then blocked a shot on a drive by Neal. Nowitzki grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Terry.

San Antonio still had a chance to win the game. Green swished his jumper off the inbound pass, but officials looked at the replay before ruling it didn't count and sending the game to overtime.

"We got a little lucky there," Nowitzki said. "I thought it was over."

Carter had 21 points, his most with the Mavericks, while Beaubois had 14. Nowitzki had 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting with 13 rebounds.

"I'm moving better," Nowitzki said. "Definitely that was an improvement from before. I'm going to keep working and get back to normal soon."

Richard Jefferson, Tim Duncan and Green each had 12 points for the Spurs.

Dallas (13-8) took over the Southwest Division lead, ahead of Houston (12-8) and the Spurs (12-9).

The Mavericks had a 67-49 lead after Terry's basket with 3:48 left in the third quarter. That's when San Antonio's reserves took over.

There were seven consecutive points to cut the gap, that capped by Matt Bonner's 3-pointer that helped ignite a frenzy of 3-pointers.

San Antonio opened the fourth quarter with a 17-2 surge that included five 3-pointers. Bonner's trey from the right wing with 8:24 left in regulation put the Spurs up 75-71.

That was from about the same spot that Green had hit before a missed shot by Nowitzki.

San Antonio, which made seven 3s in the fourth quarter, led 84-75 with 5? minutes left when Neal stole the ball from Terry and had a fast-break jumper. It was still 89-81 only 2 minutes later when Neal made a 3-pointer.

"We were unable to capitalize on it," Neal said. "They were able to make shots and forced it into overtime."

Notes: Kidd has a right calf strain, and is expected to miss at least five games. ... San Antonio finished with 12 3s, which was four less than they made when the teams first played 3? weeks ago when the Spurs won 93-72 at home. ... Manu Ginobili (broken left hand) missed his 16th consecutive game for the Spurs, while T.J. Ford (torn left hamstring) has missed 11 in a row. ... When former Mavericks owner Don Carter and his wife were showing on the video board during a timeout in the first quarter, both flashed their 2011 NBA championship rings. ... Brendan Haywood had a season-high five blocked shots for Dallas.

Basics

Old World-The realms from which the civilized races come, a continent across the seas where monsters once lived but long ago were driven to extinction.

New World- A large continent, many times the size of the New World whose boundaries have not yet been fully explored. It's habitat's range from arctic to tropical and only its eastern half is colonized. A large chain of mountains split it across the middle and form a barrier to settlers.

The Colonies- A band of settlements concentrated on the eastern shore which push ever inward into the wilderness. There are three main colonies (each founded by a separate race) which are bound together by loose treaties.

New Arcadia - The Elven colony named for its mother country. It is the southernmost of the three colonies. Much of its wealth comes from plantations which make the raw material for fine elven textiles from the sweat of enslaved monsters.

Duerheim - Located in the frozen north where only dwarves could prosper, this colony is focused unsurprisingly on extracting ore (particularly of the enchanted variety) which it ships back to the mother country for processing.

Cathandria - Named for the human saint and cleric, Cathandra, this colony is strictly regulated by the teachings of the church. It is overseen not by secular magistrates but by a grand cleric who's word is law and who answers only to the Anointed across the sea.

The Wilds - A catch all term for the uncivilized lands west of the colonies which covers many diverse regions.

The Gray Mountains - Named for the slate gray stone which composes much of its peaks and the gray fog which drifts down from it, these mountains separate the eastern half of the New World from the mysteries which lay beyond. Most mundane theorists guess another shore lies to the far west, but a few speculate that the world simply ends or one crosses over into the mythical Dragon Realm.

Dragon Realm - A myth told by sailors that a land of riches lies far to the East across the endless seas, or by some accounts beyond the Gray Mountains. Most such tales claim that the dragons, driven from the Old World, settled there, hence the name Dragon Realm.

Kandazur Jungle - A deep an impenetrable jungle east of Elven Colony of New Arcadia, it forms a barrier of thorns against all attempts at settlement. The jungle is known for its ancient ruins, hinting at lost civilizations, but explorers who venture within must be prepared to deal with the jungle's fierce predators which include giant serpents, basalisk and several varieties of troll.

Castle Betz

Castle Betz is an avarage size castle construted five hundered years ago by the Betz family. It is located in the south-western most part of the human kingdom. The castle was build too far away from any other human settlement at the time, because of this the castle often lacked the protection of the rest of the kingdom or the law enforcement making it a perfect place for bandits and outlaws. As the years past house Betz started loosing it's power and soon enough the area looked more like the wilds than a civilized human settlement. Shortly there after the castle was abandoned by house Betz which ended up moving to the human city of Cathandria in looks of political power. The castle still stands today, forgotten and in ruins, the place is left alone by most explorers and travelers since it is believed that it is haunted and that anyone that enters ends up a vampire.

Castle LaFonte

100 years ago this castle stood as the pride of the noble LaFonte Family. With it's tall towers of gleaming white stone and it's grand chapel it also stood as a rightous fortress of the human God against the wilds and "evils" of the wilds. How ironic that it how lies in ruins and is deem haunted, taken back by the wilds all because of an act of greed. For another human lord in his greed sacked and killed the Lafonte family but his victory was short lived as all was killed by the cry of the LaFonte maiden now a banshee. It is said you can still hear the mournful song of the lost maiden coming from the ruins and that none who enter this once holy fortress ever return...

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
