Microsoft announces $3999 Windows 8 Pro upgrade offer for most Windows users

Microsoft has already detailed the Windows 8 upgrade route for those buying a new computer, and it's now finally confirmed what everyone else will be paying when they upgrade their existing PC. Those running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 will able to download a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $39.99. That's a far cry from the company's earlier upgrade prices, which as recently as Windows 7 ran $50 and $99 for Home Premium and Pro upgrades, respectively. You will have to pay a bit more if you want packaged DVD version of the upgrade, though, with it running $69.99 at retail -- it also sounds like both of those prices will be going up when the promotion ends on January 31st of next year. Not surprisingly, the upgrade process will vary depending on the OS you're currently using. Those making the jump all the way from Windows XP will only able to bring their personal files with them, while those on Vista will be able to bring their personal files and Windows settings, but no applications. And, if you're wondering about Media Center, it will be available as a free option once the upgrade is finished.

Ibanez, Chavez rally Yankees past Mets 4-3

NEW YORK (AP) ? Two big home runs and a brilliant effort by the bullpen sent the New York Yankees to another comeback victory against their crosstown rivals.

Raul Ibanez tied the game with a three-run homer, pinch-hitter Eric Chavez came through with a go-ahead shot moments later, and the Yankees rallied past the New York Mets 4-3 Saturday night to stop a three-game skid.

"The bullpen came in and did an incredible job," Ibanez said.

Daniel Murphy, who hasn't homered all season, nearly won it for the Mets in the ninth inning. With a runner aboard, he hit a drive into the right-field corner that was caught just in front of the fence for the final out.

The homer-happy Yankees had no such shortcomings.

Riding the long ball again, they won for the fourth time in five Subway Series matchups this season. The finale is quite an attraction, too, with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey coming off consecutive one-hitters when he faces Yankees ace CC Sabathia in a much-anticipated duel Sunday night.

"If you haven't seen this guy, you should tune in," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

The seventh-inning homers by Ibanez and Chavez helped the Yankees overcome a three-run deficit against Chris Young. They also bailed out right-hander Ivan Nova, who left trailing 3-0 in the sixth after winning his previous five starts.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered for the Mets, who had won seven straight interleague games and four in a row overall. He also struck out his last three times up to strand five runners ? three in scoring position.

Lucas Duda had a key miscue in right field and then squandered two chances at the plate to get the Mets back in the game. They finished 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on overall before a sellout crowd of 42,122 ? the largest in the four-year history of Citi Field.

Nova had seven strikeouts, and five Yankees relievers combined for eight more in 3 1-3 innings of shutout ball. They recorded seven consecutive outs on strikeouts before Murphy's game-ending fly.

"It's kind of been a common theme for us this year. They've been so good, even in tight games like this," catcher Russell Martin said. "They just make pitches and they get us out of jams. So, they've saved us more than once this year. Not that we can get used to it, but it's really nice to have that."

The 15 strikeouts tied a season high for both teams.

Clay Rapada (2-0) fanned Nieuwenhuis with two on in the sixth, and Boone Logan pitched out of trouble in the seventh. David Robertson worked around a pair of one-out walks in the eighth, fanning Nieuwenhuis to end the inning, and Rafael Soriano got three outs for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Making his fourth major league start since returning from shoulder surgery, Young cruised into the seventh with a 3-0 lead. But it all unraveled in a span of nine pitches.

"A bloop and a blast ? they can get to you in a minute," Collins said. "Three-nothing against the Yankees isn't exactly a monumental lead."

Mark Teixeira, who is 0 for 8 against Young, worked a leadoff walk, and Nick Swisher took a hefty cut that produced only a soft fly to medium right field. Duda, still learning the intricacies of outfield play, broke back on the ball and then charged in. He came up short on a diving attempt, and the ball bounced past him for a double, Swisher's 1,000th career hit.

"He took a big swing, hit it off the end of the bat. I took a step back, then tried to make a play I really shouldn't have," Duda said.

Ibanez lined the next pitch barely over the fence in the right-field corner for his 11th homer, tying the score at 3.

"It happened fast, no question," Mets catcher Josh Thole said. "That mistake, it got us."

That was it for Young, who had an RBI single in the sixth. One out later, Chavez sliced an 0-2 pitch from Jon Rauch (3-7) into the left-field corner for his first career pinch-hit homer and the Yankees' second of the season.

"He hit a good pitch. He took a panic swing and barreled it," Rauch said. "We haven't made pitches when we need to ? I know I haven't."

Struggling to hit with runners in scoring position, the Yankees are winning with power. They have 13 home runs against the Mets this season, accounting for 20 of their 26 runs. The Bronx Bombers lead the majors with 110 homers in 70 games, including 32 in the last 18 games.

The Mets had a great chance to tie it in the seventh. But with a runner on third, Logan whiffed Duda on three pitches and made another left-handed hitter, Murphy, look bad on an inning-ending strikeout.

"I just went in there and said, 'Screw it, I'm just going to be aggressive,'" Logan said. "I enjoyed all of us getting all those strikeouts at the end there. It was cool."

NOTES: Mets closer Frank Francisco was unavailable because of soreness on his left side. He will be re-evaluated Sunday. ... Rauch has lost seven straight decisions, matching the worst skid of his career. ... 1B Ike Davis was scratched from the lineup about 90 minutes before the first pitch and was sent home with food poisoning, Collins said. ... Martin was pulled in the ninth with a stiff back. He said it's nothing he's worried about. ... The Yankees and Indians are the only teams that haven't lost four straight games this season.

Babies testing positive for pot - blame the shampoo, study finds

Commonly used baby soaps and shampoos, including products from Johnson & Johnson, Aveeno and CVS, can trigger a positive result on newborns' marijuana screening tests, according to a recent study. A minute amount of the cleansing products in a urine sample ? just 0.1 milliliters or less ? was found to cause a positive result.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, began studying the issue after an unusually high number of newborns in their nursery began testing positive for marijuana exposure. Newborn screening for marijuana at hospitals, particularly among babies of women who are considered at high risk of drug use, is not uncommon: at U.N.C. Chapel Hill, 10% to 40% of newborns are tested.

Positive results can precipitate an investigation by child welfare authorities. "We really did this to help protect families from being falsely accused," study co-author Dr. Carl Seashore, a pediatrician in the U.N.C. Chapel Hill newborn nursery, told My Health News Daily.

(LIST: 10 reasons to revisit marijuana policy now)

Soaps that were specifically associated with false-positive marijuana test results include Johnson & Johnson?s Bedtime Bath, CVS Night-Time Baby Bath, Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash and Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo.

Other products, such as Johnson?s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash, CVS Baby Wash, Baby Magic and even standard hospital gel hand soap, also indicated the presence of marijuana metabolites when tested, but not at sufficient levels to qualify as a positive result according to the hospital lab's standards.

The problem is almost certainly not limited to these products, however. Researchers also tested ingredients used widely in soaps and shampoos, including polyquaternium-11 and cocamidopropyl betaine, which both elicited positive marijuana test results. So far, there is no explanation as to why the chemicals interfere with the test's function, but importantly, they aren't intoxicating; they don't cause symptoms of marijuana exposure in children. The researchers think minute amounts of the substances were simply washing off the babies' skin into their urine samples and confounding the screens.

While more sophisticated and expensive testing can easily distinguish between true and false positive results, most hospitals don't use such tests because of the time and costs involved. And positive tests found at the hospital aren't typically sent to outside labs for confirmation, which makes false positive results ? and possible investigations afterward ? all the more troubling.

Indeed, why hospitals test infants for marijuana exposure in the first place is not entirely clear. Twelve U.S. states designate prenatal exposure to any illegal drug as child abuse; however, there is no scientific evidence that connects marijuana-smoking by a parent with abuse.

(MORE: Viewpoint: Smoke a joint, lose your child?)

The question is not whether it's acceptable for expectant mothers to use illegal drugs. No child-health expert would characterize recreational drug use during pregnancy as a good idea. But it's not at all clear that the benefits, if any, of newborn marijuana screening ? particularly given how selectively the tests are administered ? justify the potential harm it can cause to families.

?If the issue is that the mother broke the law and therefore the child should be removed, we might want to consider going after mothers who exceed the speed limit while driving," says Carl Hart, an associate professor of psychology at Columbia University and author of a leading text on drug effects. "Of course, this is ridiculous.? (Full disclosure: Hart and I are currently collaborating on a book project.)

To remove children from their home at birth because of a positive marijuana test is immediately and inexorably harmful, says Richard Wexler, executive director of the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform. "Even when the test is accurate, there is no evidence that smoking pot endangers children," he says, adding, "There is overwhelming evidence that needless foster care endangers children.?

Wexler explains that the odds of abuse and neglect are higher in foster care than they would be at home for the babies. ?These infants are being taken from homes where there is no evidence of abuse, and placed in a situation where the odds of abuse are at least 1 in 4,? he says. "The odds of this kind of separation doing emotional damage are nearly 100%. Children risk enormous emotional trauma when they are torn from their mothers during a crucial period for infant-parent bonding.?

One study of infants who were exposed to cocaine in the womb found that their physical growth and development increased when they remained with their biological mothers, compared with being removed from the home because of maternal drug use. ?For the foster children, being taken from their mothers was more toxic than the cocaine,? Wexler says.

The effects of prenatal drug exposure can vary widely. Maternal cocaine use during pregnancy has been linked with subtle developmental problems in children. But despite the popularized notion of permanently disabled "crack babies," the research shows that the harms of cocaine use in pregnancy are on par with those associated with smoking cigarettes. Both can increase the risk of preterm birth and stillbirth. Neither is as dangerous as alcohol, which can cause irreversible intellectual disability.

The evidence on marijuana is inconclusive: Some studies link marijuana use in pregnancy with reduced fetal growth and behavioral problems, but other research has found no effect. Again, the science shows no damage that approaches the harm linked with alcohol or cigarettes.

Although marijuana exposure has not been associated definitively with child harm, testing for it and placing children in foster care unnecessarily has been. Worse, the risks of custody loss are not applied equally to all women.

Determining whether a mother is considered at high risk for drug use ? and warrants newborn testing ? is ostensibly based on objective factors like whether she failed to obtain prenatal care or has acknowledged being a drug user. But in reality, characteristics like race often dictate which women are singled out for testing: a 2007 study found that babies born to black mothers were 50% more likely to be tested than white infants, even though rates of drug use and odds of positive results didn't vary by race.

If you now consider the additional risks of false-positive results due to bath soaps, it?s hard to make the case for continued newborn marijuana testing ? especially if the ultimate goal is to help children thrive.

Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp Premiere Recap: Possibly the Worst Show of Our Time

Bristol Palin's new reality show, Life's a Tripp, premiered last night, and regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, it was terrible in every respect.

The problem is not that Bristol is the daughter of Sarah Palin, it's that she comes across as a caricature; a TV personality, but not a real person by any means.

It's also entirely unclear who the project is aimed at. Uninteresting and brazenly clueless about life and the world around her, BP is not an engaging heroine.

Life's a Tripp is basically like The Hills, Jersey Shore and The Real Housewives of Orange County combined, without the self-awareness of any of the above.

Let's break it down, THG +/- style, and see how:

Bristol Palin Riding

Bristol announces the concept of her show - moving to L.A. to work for a charity, getting out of her comfort zone, etc. - and sounds 100 rehearsed. Minus 20.

Also, Tripp is three. How is this "life experience" for him? Minus 10. Good thing younger sister Willow came along too. Who needs a job or school, right?

Sarah Palin sighting! The Mama Grizzly references The Beverly Hillbillies. Is that what this is supposed to be a takeoff on? We're still unclear, but Plus 5.

Never mind that Bristol is already famous enough to live in Beverly Hills, and acts entitled, like she belongs there, no matter what she might say. Minus 5.

The ladies announce that they are staying in one of their “parents’ friends’ houses” ... which is a giant mansion. Very real and down-to-Earth, girls. Minus 5.

“People are a lot more into their image here than in Alaska.” - Bristol Palin, on a show named after and detailing the struggles of Bristol Palin. Minus 430.

And now for the infamous mechanical bull-riding scene, in which Bristol was heckled and Lifetime was sued in an exchange that reduces all faith in humanity.

From off screen, a guy yells, “Did you ride Levi like that? Your mother’s a whore!” The first part is pretty funny ... the latter not at all. It gets ugly, and fast.

This scene is just depressing, first for the heckler who uses hateful language and took cheap shots and made Bristol look like some kind of victim. Minus 15.

Of course Bristol, surrounded by reality TV cameras, tried to make his sexuality a topic of the debate. What a Clash of the Lowlifes this became. Minus 15.

Also, Minus 15 more for the Life’s a Tripp producers who can't even edit this argument in a coherent fashion. How much was edited? It's all very unclear.

Bristol walked out to call BF Gino Paoletti, saying, “I have a ton of cameras on me and a ton of paparazzi. This is not fair. This is not fun.” That felt real. Plus 20.

Of course ... the cameras were filming HER OWN REALITY SHOW AT THE TIME and she went to the epicenter of celebrity gossip, West Hollywood. Minus 440.

The famous girl who wants to be more famous, yet is too vain to see what a spectacle this is, then complains about being famous? Not sympathetic. Minus 30.

Aside from Tripp being a cute kid, there was little redeeming about this show or its protagonist. Sorry Bristol, but we're Tripping out after watching this crap.

TOTAL: -935.
